Youcef Cherfa, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, outlined Algeria’s initiatives in agricultural development and food systems during his participation in the extraordinary summit of the African Union on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) post-Malabo, held Thursday in Kampala, Uganda.

During this meeting, which also included Bakhta Selma Mansouri, the Secretary of State for African Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, Cherfa underscored Algeria’s dedication to advancing agriculture and food systems. He emphasized the nation’s experience in enhancing human capacities for sustainable and integrated natural resource management, as well as the implementation of the National Census System through the General Agricultural Census (RGA), scheduled for 2024, according to a statement from the ministry.

In his address, Cherfa urged for “strengthening continental cooperation and initiating ambitious partnerships that can elevate the food systems of African nations to new heights, aimed at addressing current challenges and fostering inclusive agricultural development across the continent.”

The minister is also expected to engage in bilateral meetings with his African counterparts and representatives from regional bodies and organizations focused on agriculture and food security during this event, as indicated in the ministry’s announcement.

It is noteworthy that the conference, which will run until January 11, will feature discussions on the post-Malabo CAADP, the examination of the strategic project and action plan for detailed agricultural development in Africa, and the Kampala Declaration on enhancing the comprehensive transformation of agri-food systems in Africa for sustainable economic development, the same source concluded.
