Rabat – UK’s Members of Parliament (MPs) have expressed their willingness to boost ties with Morocco to support the food security sector, the Food & Drink International reported.
The rising support for economic ties with Morocco came following a report published by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), which found that British consumers are buying Moroccan produce in larger amounts compared to traditional European countries.
“We’re delighted to publish this report, which shows the great strides taken between the UK and Morocco,” Chair of the APPG on Morocco Heather Wheeler said.
“Agriculture trade is crucial for both our countries, keeping British families well fed with affordable, secure produce and helping economic development in Morocco,” Wheeler stated, urging the UK government to reaffirm its commitment to bilateral trade to ensure that these benefits to both parties keep growing
Abir Lemseffer, Senior Coordinator for the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises’ (CGEM) relations with European Institutions said that the UK’s most dependable partner is Moroccan agriculture.
Lemseffer stressed that the cooperation will significantly ensure that supermarkets are consistently supplied with high-quality, fresh fruit throughout the year.
“Trade with the UK has brought enormous economic and social benefits to the people of Morocco and especially in the Sahara region, where much fresh produce is grown,” she added.
According to a report by the APPG on Morocco, British consumers are purchasing fresh food from the North African country in greater quantities than they do from traditional European nations.
The research also urges the government to take additional steps to strengthen this important commercial relationship.
Earlier this month, the British Chamber of Commerce for Morocco (BritCham) expressed its satisfaction with the various facets of economic cooperation between Morocco and the UK, during a webinar under the theme “Morocco and the United Kingdom: an evolving agreement.”
BritCham President Stephen Orr emphasized that the two nations have been working to expand and strengthen their bilateral collaboration in a number of areas, such as the pharmaceutical, textile, and agricultural industries.
