The Transition Committee Chairman of Hawul LG in Borno, Mr Inuwa Bwala, has described government support to rural farmers in Borno as unique and encouraging.
Bwala made the observation in an interview with journalists in Maiduguri during the distribution of 100 trucks of fertiliser and 312 tractors by Governor Babagana Zulum.
Years of insurgency
Bwala said the development was the best thing to happen to agriculture, as the state recover from 13 years of insurgency.
“This is the best thing to happen to agriculture and to our farmers in Borno.
“I am sure this will not only improve yield but encourage many people to go into farming,” Bwala said.
25 per cent discount
Bwala a former commissioner of information in the state, lauded Zulum for his encouragement to rural dwellers as they rebuild their lives after years of displacement.
He pledged to replicate the programme in Haul local government area, to boost agricultural activities in the area.
He urged the youths to return to their farms so as to produce enough food for their families and stem unemployment.
The fertiliser and tractors inaugurated by governor Zulum were sold to farmers and farmer groups at 25 per cent discount for fertiliser and 50 per cent for the tractors, payable between two to five years.
The 27 LGAs in Borno were also given five tractors each to plough any farmland for free on condition that the farmers will provide the fuel.
